The Eden Alternative
Allegan County Medical Care Community bases its care on the Eden Alternative. The Eden Alternative is a philosophy of geriatric care that believes aging should not be a stage of decline, but a continued stage of growth and development. The philosophy emphasizes not only the physical needs of the person, but also emphasizes the care for their mental and emotional well-being.
Each staff member at ACMCC is trained in the Eden Alternative and works to create an atmosphere that brings meaning to each patient’s life. By providing patients with a variety of spontaneous activities, the ACMCC staff helps eliminate the symptoms of loneliness, helplessness and boredom which are prevalent in many care facilities across the nation.
The Eden Alternative believes that an enlivened environment succeeds where pills and therapy do not. This includes surrounding patients with plants, animals, and frequent visits from children, as well as developing meaningful staff/patient relationships.
The Eden Alternative is changing the culture of long-term care from institutionalized and task-oriented support to interactive and meaningful care.
The Eden Alternative is a small not-for-profit organization. It was founded in 1991 by Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard-educated physician and board-certified geriatrician. The Eden Alternative has trained more than 15,000 Eden Associates and is the adopted philosophy of more than 300 registered homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
